Country
Moms and Kids was formed in April of 1986 by Rocklin resident
Chris Sinclair. Chris had moved from Auburn the previous October.
She wanted to establish new friends for herself and find playmates
for her daughter Sarah.
After
inquiries into local support groups proved unsuccessful, she
decided to form an organization based on a group she had belonged
to in Auburn called Mountain Moms and Little Folks. With the
guidance of her friends in Auburn, Chris set out to write
bylaws, establish job descriptions for a Board of Directors,
and coin a name for the new group. Next, she created a flier
to attract members, an introductory newsletter and designed
a logo.
Once
Chris had developed a structure for the group, she enlisted
the help of Jo Hemm, the local Welcome Wagon representative.
Jo provided Chris with a list of moms who were new to the
area. Between February and April, Chris contacted these women
to introduce them to the new organization called Country Moms
and Kids.
The
first meeting held in April attracted fifteen people. Within
a short time, a Board of Directors, consisting of nine members
was established. The group collected dues in order to put
on activities, record the history of the group, provide nametags
and hospitality supplies, publish a membership directory and
pay postage. It also established that the organization would
publish a monthly newsletter featuring a calendar of events,
birthdays, thank-you's, members children and advertisements.
The
first newsletter was distributed in May of 1986 to twenty-five
members. Moms Night Out, holiday gatherings, guest speakers
and park days were popular from the beginning.
Over
the years the membership has grown, changed and benefited
from the many fine people who have served as its leaders and
participated as members.
In November of 1992, Country Moms and Kids incorporated as
a non-profit organization. CM&K has remained true to the
original intent of providing support for the many challenges
of parenthood.
